English Proficiency for International Students

Georgia Tech requires that all applicants demonstrate proof of English language proficiency at the time of application. International applicants from countries in which English is not the primary native language must demonstrate proof of English language proficiency by providing one of the following:

Applicants who do not meet any of the above listed criteria will be required to submit a valid test score as outlined below. A score is considered valid if it meets the Institute’s minimum requirement for admission and is less than two years old from the date of the exam; scores must be valid at the start of the term in which you will matriculate.

The minimum scores required by Georgia Tech for graduate admission are listed below.

  • International English Language Testing System (IELTS - Academic)
    • Reading: 6.5
    • Listening: 6.5
    • Speaking: 6.5
    • Writing: 5.5
    • Overall Band Score 7.0

  • Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL)
    • TOELF iBT ≥ 90 iBT with minimum section scores of 19 or higher, or
    • TOEFL pBT ≥ 577

Please note that meeting Georgia Tech’s minimum scores does not guarantee admission since some graduate programs have higher score requirements. Applicants should review the Degree Programs | Graduate Education (gatech.edu) to determine the requirements of each graduate program prior to applying.

Disability Accommodations

Applicants who require accommodations, special arrangements for disabilities, or health-related needs should refer to the services of TOEFL or IELTS. Applicants must provide medical evidence to the testing service to support their claim.
