Minor in Creative Writing
The Minor in Creative Writing is designed to introduce students to innovative perspectives in the humanities while contributing to the Institute’s mission to develop leaders who “advance technology and improve the human condition.” In particular, the minor can foster an understanding and appreciation of the “human condition” through exposure to literature and by the creation of art that explores the self in the world. Writing and reading-intensive courses help provide a high-impact education for students, challenging them to respond to and make sense of a quickly evolving world, one where technology and the arts can work in tandem.
In terms of the Institute’s Strategic Plan, the minor in Creative Writing aligns with many aspects of the Plan. Specifically, literature and creative writing can help students be “agents of change for the public good” because reading and writing expands the mind and perspective, as well as informs students about history. The minor also aligns with helping the Institute to “create an environment of holistic learning where all members of our community can grow and learn to lead healthy, purposeful, impactful lives.” Studying writing and literature helps students improve comprehension and writing skills—all important communication skills to succeed in life and in any career. Writing and literature can also enable students to solve personal, societal, environmental, and political issues because of the empathy involved in reading and writing.
