Note: The 12-credit study abroad requirement for the B.S. ALIS degree is temporarily suspended for academic year 2022-2023. ALIS majors will still complete 30-credits of language coursework at the 2002 and above level, including the 4500 Intercultural Seminar, as well as the 18-credit cluster, but will not have to complete 12 of those credits abroad. ALIS majors are encouraged to participate in virtual faculty-led study abroad programs or LBATs or in “Global at Home” immersive programs in the event that study abroad is not possible in their language of study.

JAPN 4500, “Intercultural Seminar” is the only required language course. JAPN 4500 functions as the capstone course for the B.S. ALIS degree. Students should plan to take this course in their last spring semester before graduation and upon completion of the required study abroad credits. Please consult with advisor on scheduling for the required JAPN 4500 course. Note that a student with a valid scheduling conflict may substitute JAPN 4699 (Undergraduate Research) for JAPN 4500 (Intercultural Seminar) with approval from the Director of Undergraduate Studies and/or Assistant Director of Undergraduate Studies. Valid scheduling conflicts include co-oping, interning, or studying abroad in the spring semester of one’s senior year or needing to take another required major course in the same time slot in one’s senior year.

Japanese electives are limited to JAPN 2002 and 3000- and 4000-level Japanese courses. A student who counts JAPN 2002 toward the major requirements, may only count one JAPN 34XX course toward the major requirements. A student who does not count JAPN 2002 toward the major requirements, may count up to two JAPN 34XX courses toward the major requirements. Additional JAPN 34XX courses may be taken as free electives or to fulfill Core IMPACTS Arts, Humanities, and Ethics requirements.

A minimum of 12 credits from the Japanese Electives for the ALIS Major Requirements and/or from the Approved Cluster must be completed abroad in Japanese. A student may petition to have the 12-credit study abroad requirement reduced or waived under circumstances of extreme hardship or in the event of program cancellation. If approved, the student would substitute the overseas experience with a comparable cross-cultural experience as approved by the Program Director, Director of Undergraduate Studies, and/or Assistant Director of Undergraduate Studies.

Students are strongly encouraged to take additional language courses, linguistics courses, and relevant area studies courses as part of their free elective credits.
